Safety on two-wheeled vehicles. Practical advice

The convenience of a bicycle has been appreciated all over the world. Now it is actively used as a vehicle, sports, as well as for tourism. The bike is also popular among children, mainly for cycling or trips over short distances. The increase in the number of cyclists on the roads has led to the need to regulate their behavior.

Today, the cyclist is a full-fledged road user and driver of the vehicle, which means that he must obey the applicable traffic rules and be responsible for their violation. Cycling is a useful and exciting activity, but on the road, cyclists may encounter troubles associated with ignorance of traffic rules, the rules of operation of the bicycle and insufficient protection.

Using the carriageway, it is likely to get into an accident with a car. According to foreign studies, 11% of cyclists have crashes when they collide with other road users, while 75% of them are with a car. 65% of these incidents result in very serious injuries.

Most often, accidents involving cyclists occur due to an incorrect assessment of the road situation, and 35% due to a misinterpretation of the actions of other cyclists. That is, there is a human factor. Approximately half of the cyclists surveyed believe that other riders do not observe speed limits on special bike lanes, and a third of those surveyed believe that cyclists do not pay due attention to other road users. It is very important for the cyclist to know, understand and put into practice the rules of the road. Neglecting them leads to serious fatal accidents. The most dangerous violation of the Rules of the Road by cyclists is a left turn or a U-turn on a road with more than one lane for traffic in this direction, which is prohibited by Art. 24.8 traffic rules. Among the most frequent violations is the passage of a pedestrian crossing on horseback on a bicycle. If you need to cross the roadway, the cyclist must get off the bike and drive alongside it. Westferry cars e14

Also, cyclists are forbidden to ride by releasing the wheel of a bicycle, carry passengers on bicycles that do not have special equipment, carry cargo that protrudes half a meter in any direction or interferes with driving a bicycle, etc.

Cyclists are least protected from the danger of bodily harm in road accidents, unlike drivers and passengers of cars. That is why you need to be responsible for your equipment. It is very important that parents and educators promote the use of protective equipment among cyclist children. Indeed, the increase in the number of accidents involving cyclists and their high degree of injuries are associated with a dismissive attitude towards observing the Rules of the Road and ignoring protective equipment. First of all, you need to understand the meaning of the helmet. Confirmation that the non-use of helmets is one of the main causes of injuries on the road is the fact that head injuries to cyclists are the main cause of death and injuries due to road accidents, which accounts for 75% of deaths.

In addition to the helmet, it is important for the cyclist to use retroreflective elements, especially in conditions of insufficient visibility. Reflective reflectors should be mounted on the bike. For greater visibility, it is recommended to wear special clothing with retroreflective elements.

According to a study conducted by the NAFI agency in the framework of the Federal Target Program for Road Safety, 61% of children-cyclists do not have a helmet, at high risk of head injury. A quarter of cyclists ride without lights and retro-reflective elements. Moreover, the study showed that in children, in practice, most often there is no understanding of the behavior model of the “right” cyclist. More than 48% of respondents confirmed that their relatives do not use a helmet while riding a bicycle.

“The safety of children as full-fledged road users in the first place begins with their parents. Parents should consider it their duty to provide comprehensive information and technical training for their children in road traffic, including cyclists. And the most important thing is to demonstrate with your own example the right behavior on the road, ”said Natalia Agre, president of the Movement without Danger expert center.

Reducing the number of accidents involving cyclists and increasing the level of traffic safety is possible with an increase in the level of knowledge and driving culture. Now, to solve these problems, there are special schools that teach the rules of cycling.

In order to increase the culture of driving young cyclists, the Russian Union of Auto Insurers, together with the expert center “Traffic without danger”, opens mobile Safety Laboratories throughout the country. In the framework of the project, children are told about the features of the interaction of cyclists with pedestrians and motorists, about the rules for using protective equipment and operating bicycles.

With the increasing popularity of the bicycle as a vehicle, infrastructure is actively developing. City streets are equipped with bicycle paths, bicycle parking; measures are being taken to facilitate the use of the bicycle in combination with public transport. At the initiative of the European Cycling Federation, a network of pan-European bicycle routes, EuroVelo, is being established.

For adults

1. Show a positive example to children, observing the rules of the road when driving a bicycle.

2. Teach children the basics of traffic rules and personal safety measures, instill in children the skills of proper and safe cycling.

3. Buy a bike with your child (in accordance with its parameters and convenience).

4. Promptly purchase helmets, passive protective equipment (elbow pieces, knee pads) and retroreflective elements, and also monitor their use by children.

5. Control where, how and with whom the child rides a bicycle.

For children

1. Wear bright clothes with retroreflective stripes - this will make you more visible on the road for all participants in the movement.

2. Ride a helmet. It will protect against head injuries in the fall. The helmet must comply with safety standards and be comfortable.

3. Do not ride on the headphones. You have to hear everything that is happening around you.

4. Do not talk on the phone while riding and do not get distracted by writing messages.

5. Hold the steering wheel firmly while driving. Any roughness of the road can sharply pull the steering wheel to the side, and it can jump out of the hands.

6. Keep your fingers on the brakes so that when the slightest difficult situation arises, you can quickly break.

7. If possible, use special bike paths.

8. Obey the signals of traffic lights, the requirements of road marking, road signs. Only travel in the permitted direction on one-way streets (roads).
9. Slow down before the intersections, do not go to the intersection because of cars, as soon as the green light comes on, as there is a risk of colliding with the car that ends the intersection with the yellow light.

10. Stay away from vehicles, be prepared for his unexpected maneuvers on the road: cornering, braking, undercutting.

11. When driving around parked cars, try to keep a distance with a margin on the fully open door.

12. Always watch the road carefully: potholes, gratings of the drain, soft and deep shoulders can cause accidents and, as a result, injuries. To overcome the railway track or gratings of the gutter you need to carefully, guiding the bike at an angle of 90 °.

13. Before obstacles on the road, slow down and slow down in advance, do not leave it at the last moment.
14. If you need to go around an obstacle on the road, you must first make sure that there is no moving vehicle behind.

15. Do not cycle on highways and roads with heavy traffic. When driving along the right edge of the roadway, be especially careful.

16. In a timely manner, give turn signals and braking with your hands so that the drivers understand your intentions.

It is very important not only to know but also to observe all these rules. If the child is not sure of his knowledge, it is best to send him to study at a special bicycle school
